The introduction of the EURO in Poland could be delayed by years

Following a newspaper report, the introduction of the EURO in Poland could be delayed by years. As per today there is no 2/3 majority in the Polish parliament for a required change of the Polish constitution (which defines the Polish currency Zloty as the only admissible Polish floating currency). This uttered the social-conservative Prime Minister Mr. Donald Tusk in a report for the flag-ship Polish newspaper “Gazeta Wyborcza”. “We do not command this majority by now and as to my strong gut feeling we will not receive it in the next tenure of office” mentioned Mr. Tusk.

By this the accession of Poland to the common currency will be delayed until the year 2019 or even later. In February of the current year Mr. Tusk still mentioned 2016 as the deadline to meet. As a further ground for the procrastination Mr. Tusk put forward that the Polish national currency Zloty acts as a protection shield against an economic crisis. To integrate an economy of the huge size of Poland into the EURO-zone structures signifies a huge challenge. “Brussels understands that and trusts us”. Following the accession of Poland to the EU in 2004, Poland in general and unconditionally obliged itself towards the introduction of the EURO.
